February Photo A Day: A Stranger & The Sun

I still haven't quite caught up on my February Photo A Day Challenge. However, I am slowly making progress. (Emphasis on "slowly")

The above photo is my entry for both day 4 (A Stranger) and day 8 (The Sun).

As I mentioned in my last post, it has been a very rainy and gloomy winter thus far. So any hint of sunshine is a welcome sight.

Day 8 is pretty self-explanatory.

I bought my first (two) vintage dress(es) recently and I look forward to sharing them soon.

February Photo A Day: Your View Today

It should come as no surprise that I am behind on the February Photo A Day Challenge. The above picture (video) is my entry for day one-Your View Today.

This was my view yesterday.

This creek bank is one of my favorite places on our property. We have had a very rainy winter so the water level is quite a bit higher than usual.

One goal I have, in addition to actually completing this challenge, is to step outside the box and take a more unconventional approach to these daily prompts. I'm hoping the video above is a step in the right (or wrong) direction.

Frozen Hearts

Just in case there was any question regarding my fascination with nature I have another nature-infused post for you today. The idea for these frozen hearts is from this fellow nature enthusiast. The heart molds I have had for ages, and I never found a use for them until I saw this post. A few winter berries, some small sprigs of greenery, and a little water are all that is required to make these frozen winter decorations.

Like most of the country (U.S.), winter has been unseasonably warm for us this year. This means these little frozen hearts are in a constant rotation of melting and re-freezing. These ornaments would look great hanging outdoors. Weather permitting.

Since starting this blog way back when, I have wanted to participate in a photo a day challenge. I've decided February is going to be my month. I normally don't run across these challenges until they have already begun, and I don't want to start the challenge by being behind. Therefore, I always promise myself that I'll catch the next month's challenge. On time. And we all know how that turns out, don't we? The vicious cycle continues.

I think instead of posting each daily photo I'll do a weekly update with my pictures from that week. For me, that will be the easiest way to document my progress.

Gift Packaging

One of my favorite aspects of any celebratory event in which gifts are exchanged is the opportunity to package those gifts in unique and interesting ways. I like picking a specific theme (color, pattern, etc) to dress my gifts and this Christmas was no exception.

I wanted this year's packaging to have a natural theme and was able to achieve this look by using brown craft paper and winter foliage. The above box is covered with faux bois contact paper inspired by one of my favorite bloggers. (Tutorial here.) It was incredibly easy to do. I just tied a piece of raffia around my covered box and tucked in a few pieces of fresh greenery. The best part is, that unlike most Christmas packaging, with a couple of minor changes this packaging can be used for various celebrations throughout the year.

Project Restyle

This is my favorite restyle project to date.

This table had been sitting around in storage for quite a while and at times I considered donating it. I was so glad I didn't when I saw this tutorial. The only thing I had to purchase was the lace to use as a stencil. The remaining supplies I already had on hand.

This is a great project to use up those leftover cans of spray paint that many of us have sitting around.

If you've tried this project I would love to see how yours turned out!

Tell Me About Yourself (Part II)

I'm going to get to the second half of the "Tell Me About Yourself" tag in just a bit, but first I have a little something I want to discuss.

I've seen the above photograph numerous times on various Pinterest boards. I think it's such a dreamy, not to mention, magical photo. One reason I may be partial to this photo is because it's mine. I took it a couple of years back and posted it on Flickr. Initially, I was flattered that someone had added one of my photos to Pinterest, but was immediately disappointed when I saw that I wasn't given credit for the photograph. (Google images is getting the undeserved credit.) I was wondering if any of you had run into this issue on Pinterest or any other similar websites. If so, how did you handle the issue? I'd love any tips you could pass my way.

An Explanation

Things have been quiet on this blog for a couple of weeks now, and I feel I owe those of you that check in here on occasion a bit of an explanation.

Initially, when I started this blog it was to fulfill a goal to be the author of my own blog. ( I gave myself a time frame of six months.) I want(ed) to have meaningful and interesting things to say, and made a promise to myself that the minute I felt as though these two things were falling to the wayside, that I would sign off. I refuse to post just for the sake of posting. If my readers are going to take a few minutes out of their day to read what I have to say then I owe it to them to make their time spent here worthwhile.

With this said I'm going to ride this blogging break out for a little while longer, but I intend to return. I would like to ask a little favor of those of you wiling to share your opinions. What kinds of things do you like to see and/or read about on your favorite blogs? I'm gathering inspiration, and would love any input you are willing to share.

Race Weekend

This past weekend, my sister and I went to a Nascar race. Our local track hosts two races a year, one in March and another in August. I realize that a lot of people might not see the appeal of watching 20 plus cars going around in circles, and for a long time I was one of them. It's a completely different experience watching a race in person as opposed to watching one on television. Race fans take their sport ( yes, I consider it a sport) very seriously, and their dedication is obvious.

Here are a few pictures from this weekend:

The parking situation is insane. I don't know exactly how far we walked, but to give you a perspective it was as far as you can see in the picture below and beyond.

1. The best deal I've ever gotten is the most recent deal was last weekend. I scored six juice glasses with mushroom motifs for $1.00 at the flea market.

2. If I were hosting a dinner party and could invite people from my fantasy guest list it would include (if I could choose dead or alive)

-Amelia Earhart: Guest of honor.

-Jimmy Fallon: To add comic relief.

-David Tutera: To plan the party.

-Adam Lambert: To serenade the guests.

3. Something that inspires me is so many things. Nature is one of my biggest sources of inspiration. I'm also very inspired by things I see on Etsy, Flickr, and other bloggers.

4. If I could only choose to eat one flavor of food (sweet, salty, bitter, spicy) for the rest of eternity I would have to go with definitely sweet, much to this dismay of my waistline.

5. I (day) dream about meeting a nice guy, getting married, and owning my own home.

6. My weekend will be spent enjoying the sunshine, (hopefully) working on a couple of WIP, and going to a Nascar race.

7. If I could only watch one movie or one TV show for the rest of my life, it would be a toss up between "Project Runway" and "The Middle". "Project Runway" for it's creative and inspirational qualities, and "The Middle" for pure brain numbing entertainment.

Making Soap

This past weekend, I decided to try my hand at soap-making. (Initially, I wanted this post to be a tutorial, but the process I used was so incredibly simple that it can't really be categorized as a tutorial.)

You know all of those slivers of soap that are too small to use, but you hate to throw away? Thanks to eHow I found a way to give new life to these otherwise useless pieces of soap.

Here is how I did it: (As I mentioned above, there are so few steps that I didn't bother dragging out my camera to document the steps.)

1. Gather up all soap slivers (Just stating the obvious.) If soap slivers vary in size, use a knife (or instrument of choice) to cut soap into like-sized pieces.

2. Place soap slivers into a microwavable safe bowl, and microwave until all the soap pieces have melted together.

3. Using a spatula for control, pour melted soap mixture into soap molds.

4. Optional. Our house was too warm, making it impossible for the soap to harden so I placed the molds into the freezer to speed up the hardening process.

Once out of the molds, the soap was exactly what I had hoped for, but for whatever reason it melted quickly. The first bar we tried to use disintegrated in the hot, steamy shower. Apparently, I need to tweak my "recipe".

Has it really been one whole week since I've posted? Initially, I intended on only "taking off " for a couple of days, but I guess I needed a (blogging) break worse than I thought. Hopefully, I won't go that long again between postings.

I first saw this mini polaroid album when Janel posted about it here. They come in a variety of colors, and are extremely affordable. I've had my Fuji Instax for a couple of years, and have only taken one picture with it. Maybe if I owned this album I would be apt to using it more. Sounds to me like a perfect excuse to purchase one.

Speaking of Janel, are you familiar with her "Push For Pita" fundraiser? If you haven't heard of this campaign, here is a bit of a description in Janel's own words.

After using the same camera for a couple of years I am itching for an upgrade. I have narrowed down my search to two options.

Option 1: Canon Powershot SX30 (This reviews on this camera were outstanding.)

Here is the description from the Dell's website:

Cherubs & Hearts

Since seeing these candlesticks on Flickr months ago I have been inspired to "make" some of my own. I was quite partial to her cherub candleabra, but the only ones I could find where on Ebay and were more than I was looking to spend. Imagine my surprise when I stopped at a local flea market and found the set below for $1.50! (The melted wax on the bases was included at no extra charge.)

After a good soak in some warm soapy water, they were as good as new. A couple coats of Krylon spray paint later, and this is how they turned out.

I am super happy with the end result. They will be a great addition to my Valentine's Day decor.

Speaking of V Day, here is another little Valentine art piece that I created.

It literally took no time at all to complete. To make it I painted a small artist's canvas in cream paint, and used Valentine scrapbook paper to cut out each individual heart. Each heart is adhered to the canvas using a pop up glue dot.

So easy!

Swap & Wrap-Up

I had remember seeing this (Silver Bella?) project on several blogs ages ago, and ever since I have been eager to make my own version. I recently joined this swap, and I am looking forward to incorporating one of these into my swap partner's package.

Some high points of the past week, and weekend:

-Finally the weather cooperated enough that we were able to get the outside Christmas decorations taken down

Dream Room & Updates

I'm not sure what the function the above room serves (kitchen, dining, art, etc) but I do know that I love it. This one is definitely going into the inspiration folder. I love that the designer/owner incorporated natural elements (plank table) with such colorful accessories. I think it works so well together. (I especially love the unique shelving on the back wall, genius!)

Remember the dilemma I posted about here. Well, I decided to try contacting the seller one last time in hopes of resolving the issue. She is still adamant that she mailed my original order, but agreed to mail me another one. Now it is just a matter of waiting to see if she stays true to her word. I'll keep you posted.

I've been doing a bit of painting as of late. I'm working on a custom order of four cottage ornaments, two of which I have already completed. I also restyled these cherub candlesticks. They turned out better than I had imagined. I can't wait to share!

New Years Goals

I'm not one to make resolutions, never have been. However, goals are a different story. Goals are fun! I made a few goals a while back that I (regrettably) have yet to accomplish. I figure I will just carry those same goals over into the new year, and just add this years goals to the list.

These are last years goals:

1. To Keep This Blog Going. I'm giving myself a time frame of six months, I think that will allow me enough time to get a feel for this new environment, but short enough so I don't run the risk of becoming bored. I want to have meaningful, and interesting things to say, and the minute I feel as though these two things are falling to the wayside, then I'm signing off.

2. Restock my Etsy shop. The shelves in my Etsy shop have been bare quite long enough. I want to find interesting items that both my customers and I love.

3. Work on making my dream of owning my own home a reality.

4. Complete some (if not all) of the unfinished projects I have laying around my home. I'm notorious for starting a project, and never seeing it to completion. However, this does not dissuade me from beginning another project, which results in the same outcome. I must learn to end this vicious cycle.

A couple of new goals:

5. Buy a new camera. I've had my eye on one for a few months. The camera I am currently using works fine. I'm just ready for a bit of an upgrade.

6. Possibly participate in this project.

I'm sure I'll be adding (and hopefully completing) some goals throughout the year. Do you make resolutions or are you more goal oriented? I'd love to hear!

First Post Of 2011

So, is everyone ready to begin a brand new year? I suppose I am as ready as I am ever going to be. I can't say that I was sad to see 2010 come to an end. It was a year full of loss, sadness, and uncertainty. Fingers crossed this year will be nothing of the like.

Here is the picture I promised of the handmade sign I made my sister for Christmas. I used this perfect tutorial. It was my first time using freezer paper to make stencils, and let me tell you that stuff worked amazingly well. The process was extremely time consuming, but I think the outcome was completely worth it.

I also wanted to share with you this cottage ornament I painted for a special order. I have painted a lot of these over the past couple of years, and I think this is by far my favorite. I think it's because it reminds me of the mushroom houses on the Smurfs.

Project Restyle

How was everyone's Christmas holiday? I hope it was full of all things wonderful. My holiday was nice, albeit bittersweet. It was the first Christmas since losing both my father and grandfather, so there was a definite void this holiday season. Maybe this is the reason I just couldn't seem to get it all together this year. I did manage to make some homemade candy and get my sister's handmade gift completed, so it wasn't a complete bust.

(I'll share pictures of what I made her, as soon as I remember to take pictures of it. )

I saw online recently that Amanda from Bake It Pretty now has a brick and morter store in Asheville, so we decided to take a little impromtu day trip on Sunday to check it out.

Such a cute little shop. A definite must-see for any cupcake/baking lover!

Also while in Asheville we visited the Grove Park Inn to see the gingerbread house entries for the National Gingerbread House Competition. (Before I get to the gingerbread displays I want to share an exterior picture of this gorgeous resort.)

Weekend Recap

This past weekend was one of the busiest weekends we've had in quite awhile. It was so jam packed that I'm going to break down the details into two posts.

On Saturday we visited a little town that would best be described as something you would see in a Hallmark movie. The town is only an hour away, but for whatever reason we never seem to visit. I think after this initial visit we will be returning again soon.

It certainly wasn't my intent to go (nearly) an entire week without posting. I will admit I was starting to get into a blogging rut, and I think taking this unintentional hiatus was a blessing in disguise. I have only a few short weeks left in completing my blogging goal, and though I'm not entirely sure if I'll continue blogging once this goal is met, I do know that I want to (attempt) to be more consistent in posting. We'll see how it goes.

I don't think I have ever mentioned that I do all my blogging from work, have I? It's true, and that is one reason for my recent absense. Last week (in the midst of my rut) we had a bit of a snow and ice storm, and I ended up working just half the week. I could blog from home, but I find it easier (and less distracting) to do it here, at work.

Flashback Friday

Flowery Weekend

It was another snowy and cold weekend here, so don't let the title of this post fool you. Although, it is nice to imagine a climate warmer than the one in which we are currently living. (Am I the only one who does this?)

Yesterday my mom, sister and I went to a local museum to see the work of a local garden club that was being featured. Each individual club member creates arrangements/displays using many different types of design material. (i.e. leaves, berries, dried flowers, fruit, etc.) Each arrangement is judged, and ribbons are awarded.

Manic Monday

To say that this Monday morning started out eventful would be an understatement. Halfway on my way to work this morning copious amounts of steam began to billow from under my car hood, while simultaneously my temperature gauge took a bee dive for H. Thankfully, there is an auto parts store close to my work that a relative manages, and when I saw he was working I immediately pulled in hoping he could remedy the situation. Once he raised the hood it was obvious as to what the problem was, a tiny hole in my radiator hose. A replaced hose, and a gallon of antifreeze later and it is (almost) as good as new!

All car troubles aside, how was your Thanksgiving holiday? I enjoyed five leisurely days off, lots of turkey, and some Christmas decorating thrown in for good measure.

I think today calls for some pretty pictures full of inspiration, don't you?

Just so it's clear, I'm not skipping holiday's here. Just wanted to share the above image with you. It's a picture that was taken a couple of weeks ago (by me) when we had our first snowfall of the season. I used Picnik to add the text, and had the image printed into several postcards. Because of the limited amount of printing I do, I find that Walgreen's fulfills all of my printing needs. I use the online site, and have never been disappointed with either the quality or value. I chose to leave the back of the cards blank, that way they can be used as a stocking stuffer, or an addition to a small gift.

I've been thinking a lot recently about this blog. When I started blogging, four short months ago, it was my intention to try it for six months and see how well it fit me. I still plan on keeping that goal, especially with just two short months to go. However, I will admit that (for me) blogging can be a bit frustrating. I didn't expect it to be a raging success right out of the gate, even I wasn't that naive, but I have to wonder sometimes if what I'm writing is even being read. The lack of comments can be quite disheartening, and it leads me to wonder if aspects of my blogging are needing revamped. I would appreciate any advice you are willing to share.

Weekend Wrap-Up

This weekend was a productive one. Unlike the past two weekends where I got nothing accomplished.

Saturday we partook in what has become a yearly tradition of seeing the Santa Train. (You can read more about the Santa Train here.)

I took very few pictures this year, but here are some pictures of last year's Santa Train.

We also went to several Christmas open houses some local retailers were having. I didn't find anything, but it was fun looking. I did a bit of crafting on Saturday. I am working on a project that is completely inspired by this glowing house. Also in the business of making things, I'm currently working on this ornament kit from "My Paper Crane" that I have had for a year. Hopefully, I can stay motivated long enough to get both projects completed before Christmas.

Sunday was my more productive of the two days. I took advantage of the warm weather to do some end of the season yard work. There were so many leaves that needed to be gotten up, and the idea of raking them was not at all appealing. I decided to make quick work of the job, and used the mower instead. Good exercise (I used a push mower), and the yard looks a tremendous amount better. A double win! Later in the evening we went to dinner at the always fun, and eclectic "Cootie Brown's". It is such a fun restaurant!

Overall, a pretty full weekend!

Flashback Friday

Lately, I have been wanting to add some consistency to this blog in the form of a weekly feature. I knew I wanted it to be something original (something none of the blogs I follow are currently doing), but also fun and interactive for both myself and my readers (there are some of you out there, right?). I've brainstormed several ideas, and think I have finally come up with something that just might work. The majority of my inspiration came from this post written a couple of months back.

So, here is the (tentative) plan. Each Friday I will post something from the past. It may be a music video, clothes reminencent of days gone by, clips of old television shows, etc.

Here is an example:

I vividly remember being a young child and watching "Saved by the Bell" on Saturday mornings. It was probably my favorite half hour of television of the whole week. They made school look so fun, and the characters were so diverse that there was someone we all could relate to.

"My So-Called Life" By Polyvore

Are you familiar with Polyvore? It is described here as "a site where you can create different "sets" or outfits virtually. It's better and easier than looking at items separately and trying to determine if they would go together or not." There are endless amounts of accessories, clothing, shoes, etc to mix and match to design your perfect outfit/wardrobe.

Above are two examples of sets made using Polyvore. I have recently been re-familiarizing myself with the 90's television series "My So-Called Life" (compliments of Netflix) and love how the styles of the characters are so reminiscent of the grunge era. Lots of plaid, flannel, and Dr Martens. The Rayanne Graff set was made by another Polyvore/ "My So-Called Life" fan, and the Angela Chase set was made by yours truly.

I was never entirely happy with my old banner, and had been wanting to refresh this little space for awhile now. My old banner was cute, but it wasn't a true representation of my personality. I scoured numerous blogs looking at banners, and when I saw Janel's banner I knew immediately that I wanted to work with the same person who designed hers. I contacted her immediately, and I can honestly say I have never met anyone so helpful, and/or talented in my life! Nature-Inspired Tutorials

Disclaimer: I made a goal a few weeks back stating that I was going to complete all of my unfinished projects before beginning any new ones. However, I decided to stretch the rules just a bit. Weekend Wrap-Up

It was another low-key weekend around these parts. The weather Saturday was perfect, warm and sunny. We took advantage of the abnormally warm temperatures to do some yard work, clean out gutters, and get some Christmas lights hung. In my humble opinion it's still a bit early to be decorating for Christmas, but when it takes half a day to get all the lights hung and the weather is permitting you do what you have to. To be honest, I did turn them on for a little while just to admire my handy work. On Sunday, the weather did a 180. It was rainy, and the temperature was much cooler. The perfect weather for crafting, but for whatever reason I didn't work on a single project. In my defense, I need to make a trip to the craft store before I can begin my next project. I did get one crate of the walnuts I mentioned here hulled. One crate down, 13 more to go!

4 Simple Goals-Update

You may (or may not) recall this post from a couple months back in which I decided to take part in Elsie's "4 Simple Goals" prompt. As I stated in the original post, I tried to pick and list practical goals that I felt I could accomplish. I thought it would be fun to do a updated post to document my progress in getting these goals accomplished. (The updates are in bold.)

1. To Keep This Blog Going. I'm giving myself a time frame of six months, I think that will allow me enough time to get a feel for this new environment, but short enough so I don't run the risk of becoming bored. I want to have meaningful, and interesting things to say, and the minute I feel as though these two things are falling to the wayside, then I'm signing off.

* I have to say, I have really surprised myself that I have kept this blog going for as long as I have. I have a very short attention span, and lose interest in things relatively quickly. I will admit that sometimes I struggle with blog topics, but somehow I continue to persevere. I'm halfway through my six month goal, and only time will tell if I continue on after my initial time frame.

2. Restock my Etsy shop. The shelves in my Etsy shop have been bare quite long enough. I want to find interesting items that both my customers and I love.

* This goal hasn't been completed for no other reason than my own battle with procrastination. I have several items stashed away that need to be listed but I just never seem to get around to actually doing it. With the holidays approaching I need to get busy!

* I know the house plans I want, and where I would like it built but the lack of funds are prohibiting this dream from becoming a reality for the time being.

4. Complete some (if not all) of the unfinished projects I have laying around my home. I'm notorious for starting a project, and never seeing it to completion. However, this does not dissuade me from beginning another project, which results in the same outcome. I must learn to end this vicious cycle.

* Does it count as an accomplishment if you aren't beginning any new projects, but aren't working on any semi-finished projects either? Some of the projects I have yet to tackle are in-depth (sanding, painting, etc) and would require one to be outside which isn't at all practical in Virginia this time of year. (Yes, I'm using the weather as a scapegoat.)

I'm not doing terrible, but there is definitely room for improvement.

Seasonal Purgatory

It seemed this weekend Mother Nature may have gotten a bit ahead of herself.

This was the scene when I woke up Saturday morning.

Would someone please remind her that it's just the first of November?

My weekend was pretty low-key, which is exactly how I like them. The only semi-productive thing I did was on Saturday when I had an appointment to get my hair "touched up'. (By "touched up" I mean "get rid of all evidence my hair isn't naturally this blond".) I did manage to get the ornaments I mentioned here finished. I'll share a picture of them soon. I am really pleased with how they turned out.

King Of Anything

How many times have you heard a particular song, and been able to completely relate to the lyrics? This is how I feel about the song/video below. I heard it the first time about a week ago, and it has quickly become one of my favorite songs. I think it's suffice to say that we have all come in contact with this type of guy once (or twice) in our lifetime, right girls?

Random Thursday

This picture was taken over a month ago, and I'm just now getting around to sharing it. It is one of the most charming places I have ever seen. It currently houses an art gallery and a cafe. (On the far right side of the picture is a screened porch area called "The Veranda", which I assume is part of the cafe.) My favorite feature is/was the different colored shutters. Unfortunately it was closed when we visited, but if the inside is anything near as magical as the outside then I'm certain it's amazing!

Other random notes:

-This news pretty much made my entire week, or month for that matter. So excited!

- I've been painting some cottage (Christmas) ornaments, similiar to this. My mom has a friend who owns an antique/home decor shop and I'm hoping to sell a few in her shop. Her Christmas open house in in less than two weeks so I need to get cracking.

-Speaking of cracking, here is this years walnut bounty. All off of one tree. There were two more crates in addition to these, but apparently the squirrels discovered my stash and decided to help themselves. My intentions are to hull, and crack them myself. We will probably keep some to use in baking, and sell the rest.

Halloween Wrap Up

Here are a few pictures of our Halloween decorations from this weekend.

*The top-left picture is the result of cutting bat after bat out of plain black poster board and using double-stick tape to secure them to the side of the house. The effect was exactly what I was hoping for. The shadow's cast by the porch light was eerily perfect!

*Inspired by this lady's twig-tree decoration I painted several tree branches with black spray paint, added one strand of orange lights, and for extra sparkle added some orange and black Halloween ornaments.

*A picture of this year's jack o' lantern. Normally, I carve very elaborate, time consuming pumpkins. However, this year with all the other decorations, and my terrible time management skills I kept it pretty traditional.

A couple of other Halloween related mentions:

As promised here is a picture of the contents of my Sweet & Sinister swap box.

It included:

- An embellished vintage picture frame that Christine (my swap partner) painted with chalkboard paint. She also made the "Spooky" banner that adorns the frame.

-A handmade journal/photo album. It has several blank pages just waiting to be filled.

-Also included was a little tin, also embellished, filled with lots of both vintage doilies, and lace.

Another thing worthy of mentioning is that this weekend Rachel from "One Pretty Thing" featured my marshmallow treat lollipop's tutorial in her "Halloween Food Roundup".

Random fact: We had 13 trick or treaters this year. Could there be a more perfect Halloween-ish number?

All About Hallows Eve

You might remember me mentioning in one of my earlier posts about signing up for Artsy Mama's "Sweet & Sinister Swap". I was partnered up with a great gal, Christine. (Her blog is definitely worth checking out, she is one very creative lady.) This week I received my swap box, and here is a glimpse of what she included.

You have no idea how much patience it took to get this shot when all I wanted to do was tear into it all. She wrapped everything so beautifully, using items I would have never considered. (i.e napkins and gauze) I did finally get to open it, and I was so impressed/pleased with everything she included. I have yet to get a shot of everything since I've opened it, but it's definitely on my "to-do" list.

A couple of other Halloween notes:

* I have what I think is such a fun idea using this template.

* I am kind of bummed that my Ms. Havisham display more than likely isn't going to be happening this year. I never realized how impossible it is to locate a mannequin. I probably should have started looking a little earlier.

* I still really need to pick out my pumpkin carving pattern already. (Here, here, and here are pictures of pumpkins past.)

Marshmallow Treat Lollipop Tutorial

This weekend my sister and I attended an annual Halloween party. Every year we take some kind of treat to share among the guests. One year we put together these witch brooms, and another year we went traditional and made candy apples.

This year we made these:

Here is how we did it.

First you need to gather your supplies:

Your next step will be to assemble the actual lollipop. (That sounded better than telling you to stick a craft stick into a marshmallow treat.)

Next place the candy melts into a microwave safe dish (you could also use a double boiler), and melt your candy into the proper consistency. (I didn't get a picture of the candy after it was melted, only before.)

Spoon the melted candy over your marshmallow treats, and place on a wax lined cookie sheet and allow candy to harden:

Once the candy has harden, place each lollipop into individual treat bags and tie off with a festive ribbon.

These are really fun to make, and all of the ingredients/supplies are readily available. These can be interpreted many different ways to coordinate with any holiday/celebration. If you try your hand at making these, I'd love to hear about it!

Sick Day/Conversations With The Dr.

It seems I have caught a cold. I felt it sneaking up on me, so I can't say I was completely blindsided when I awoke this morning feeling miserable. Luckily, I was able to see the nurse practitioner (who also happens to be my cousin) before coming into work (late).

Here is how our conversation progressed:

(*Note that her nurse had already swabbed my throat to check for strep)

NP: "Your strep came back negative."

Me: "If it hurts this bad, and the test is negative then I would hate to see what it felt like if the test came back positive."

NP: "What else is bothering/hurting you?"

Me: "My head, and ears."

She then looks into my ears, and checks my lungs.

NP: "Sounds good."

Me: "Can I have a penicillin shot?" (I really dislike taking pills.)

NP: "No, your strep came back negative."

Me: Damn. (I didn't say this out loud.)

NP: "Have you ever taken Z Pac?"

Me: "Yes".

NP: "Okay, we'll try that."

Me: "Can I have a prescription for Amoxicillin?" (Because in my experience Z Pac doesn't work.)

NP: "Sure, it will prevent you from getting a sinus infection."

Me: "I still think I have strep throat."

NP: "It is possible that the test gave a false negative."

Me: In which case, if it is strep it would constitute a shot? (Thinking)

She leaves and comes back into the room with my prescription, which I found after having filled is 28 horse pills that I have to take for the next two weeks!

A penicillin shot would have been so much easier....

Five Funny Habits

In my last post I listed my five guilty pleasures (aka obsessions), and now I'm back to list five of my funny habits.

The beach. I don't like the beach. This isn't really a "funny habit", but generally people are aghast when they hear this. I'm a country girl through and through.

Uncovered feet. I can not stand for my feet to be uncovered while I'm sleeping. I either have to be wearing socks or have my feet under the covers in order to fall asleep.

Shopping carts. If I'm using a cart while shopping, all the items must be lined up straight. I don't designate this rule to just my cart either, I have been known to straighten up the items in my mom's cart as well. I can't stand when people just throw the items in haphazardly. (I do draw the line at straightening up total strangers carts.)

Post office. I realize a lot of people don't look forward to going to the post office, but I'm not one of them.
I really enjoy running errands, (I don't know if it's so much the errands themselves, or the feeling of being productive that I enjoy) and the post office is one of my favorites!

Food Network. In my opinion the best tv channel, ever. I could watch hours upon hours and never tire of it. However, I can't cook nor do I have any desire to learn how. Ironic, huh?

Five Guilty Pleasures

Elsie from "A Beautiful Mess" had a really fun blog post recently listing 10 of her funny habits and guilty pleasures. I thought it would be fun to do a similar post with a couple of differences. Instead of listing 10, I'm going to narrow mine down to five and I'm going to break mine down into two posts. Up first are my five guilty pleasures!

-Spray paint. I love how one can of paint can transform an ordinary object into something extraordinary! Sometimes I'll buy a can just because I love the color!

Miss Havisham Has A Dress

Remember this post? If you do, then you will recall my interest in incorporating the Charles Dickens character of Miss Havisham into this years Halloween decorations. One very important element of the story is that of Miss Havisham's wedding gown. I knew I wanted (needed) a dress in decent vintage condition, nothing too perfect nor too pricey. So, I gave myself the challenge of finding the perfect dress for $20.00 or less, and here is what I found.

To be honest this particular dress wasn't my first choice. My first choice dress was more ornate, with tons of

bead work. I was "watching" it on Ebay, and eventually placed a bid. Needless to say it went for a lot more

than I was interested in spending, so I continued searching. This dress also came from Ebay, and it was one of those "make me an offer" sells. The listing described it as a bit yellowed, which I thought merely added to the character of the dress. I love to imagine the woman who wore this dress. How old was she? What did she look like? Did she live happily ever ever? I like to think she did.

Here is an updated picture of the candelabra I posted about here. Initially, I wanted to paint it black, I thought that would make it look very Halloween appropriate. However, I knew I wanted it to have a chandelier-like look, and that I wanted to use black drip candles (found here) for effect so I chose to paint it silver instead. I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Etsy, A Tutorial, And An Anniversary (Kind Of)

My Version Of Enid

I had this Enid Collins purse as one of my Etsy favorites for what seemed like forever. It was priced a little higher than what I was willing to spend, so when it sold I decided I would make my own (simplified) version.

A wooden box purse, glass leaf beads from this Etsy shop, a little paint and this is what I ended up with:

I was actually quite pleased with the results, not to mention all the money I saved by making my own!

I have recently begun re-reading "Great Expectations", and am truly inspired by the melancholy character Miss Havisham. (If you aren't familiar with this Dickens classic, you can read more about Miss Havisham here.) So inspired in fact that one of my main goals is to incorporate this character into my Halloween decorations. (You can see one element of my decorations here.) I'm still in the planning stages, but I hope to share my progress here.
